February 13th. While some people have an irrational fear of the number 13, for me, it has always been lucky. And one year ago today, I was lucky enough to visit a local distillery for the first time. I had booked a tour and tasting as a Valentine’s surprise for my dear husband. And frankly, I didn’t expect to get much out of the tour. I didn’t care for rye whiskey, but I knew it was my husband Kaden’s favorite, and that was enough for me!
Turns out we were both surprised. I was surprised by the feeling of history in the stillhouse, the smell of the mash fermenting, and the flavor of the three whiskeys we sampled. Strike that–I was SHOCKED by the flavor of the whiskeys! The rye was my favorite. It was both clean and complex, and smooth as silk.
By the end of our visit, the seeds of the Dayton Comestibles concept had already been planted, and we were on our way to making our whiskey mustard and other condiments.
Now, a year later, we have a product–an award-winning product!–and we’re still making our way through the process of taking it to store shelves. There’s been a delay of about 8 months as we recovered from the house fire, and our latest bump in the road is a trademark issue with the name of the mustard. Without a legally-blessed name, we can’t move forward with our planned Kickstarter or any additional marketing or promotion, so naturally we’re eager to get this resolved soon. Wish us luck, on this our 1st Mustard Anniversary! In the mean time, please visit the home page and add yourself to the mailing list so we can let you know when we’re underway again.
